Paige and Ben customized their Lansing, MI wedding to reflect their favorite things: Michigan State, Soccer, and Harry Potter.
When: June 6, 2016
Location: Ceremony at DeMartin Stadium (MSU Soccer Stadium), and reception at Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, East Lansing, MI.
Ben and Paige both played soccer at Michigan State University, so why not get married in the soccer stadium?! Incorporating their soccer roots, the couple got dressed and ready for the ceremony in the men’s and women’s locker rooms, and carried the soccer theme on to the reception.
Caterer: Kellogg Center
Officiant: Gregory McDonnough
Florist: Mary Ballard (Independent Florist) Lansing, MI
Wedding Planner: I planned it myself! With the help of my mom and bridesmaids of course!
How he proposed: Harry Potter is just something I have always loved. I read all of the books multiple times and have seen the movies one hundred times. Ben proposed to me in front of Hogwarts Castle at Universal Studios in Orlando, FL. We thought with that type of proposal, we had to include it in the wedding in small subtle ways.
DJ: Juan Vargas
Cake: Stacy DeLonge (cupcakes)
Linens: Kellogg Center, white table linens
Lighting: Kellogg Center
Wedding favors: Homemade Harry Potter wands as wedding favors
Wedding design and theme: It was a garden theme, but we tried to incorporate all of our favorite things! We added a touch of Michigan State, soccer, and Harry Potter
Honeymoon: Topsail Island, NC. The house was on the beach and we could walk right out to the ocean. It was so nice to be able to do nothing with each other after the stress and anxiety of a wedding.
The moment after we were married and walking back across the field hand in hand was my most memorable moment of the day.
Centerpieces: Brass candlesticks, blush and ivory flowers, gold knick knacks, and glass flutes
Wedding Party: 7 Bridesmaids, 7 Groomsman
Bridesmaids Dresses: Various styles in Blush
Groomsmen’s Suits: Grey, but the groom was in dark green.
Wedding Dress: Ivory
Shoes: Custom Nikes. The bridesmaids wore white, groomsman wore dark green. Ben and I had matching grey ones with our wedding date embroidered on the heel.
Jewelry: Gold and Pearls
Rings: Yellow Gold
Old, new, borrowed, and Blue: Old- my mom made me a bracelet and put lace from my grandma’s dress (her mom) in the charm part. New- earrings. Borrowed- my floral hair piece. Blue- undies, hehe.
Before the wedding: The girls got ready at HEAT Blow Dry Bar in the Michigan Athletic Club. The Boys hung out at watched soccer all day. We got dressed in the men and women’s MSU soccer locker rooms.
First Dance Song: Can’t Help falling in Love, by Elvis Presley
Did you hand-make or DIY any wedding items? Yes! Our wedding favors were the homemade Harry Potter wands. I also made the seating chart board, centerpieces, table numbers, and programs.
Don’t take it too seriously. Just have fun and make it what you want. We had random and dorky things, but it was “us” and we loved every second of it.
What was the biggest roadblock that you ran into while planning the wedding? The guest list. After we sent invitations people would write in plus ones when they were not given one. Weddings are expensive and it put us in an awkward position to have to call people and tell them we are on a strict guest list.
Who/what gave you the most help in the planning process? My mom. She helped so much both financially and with the planning process. I couldn’t have done it without her.
How much influence did your family/ fiancé have in the planning process? My fiancé and I were most involved in planning. We tried to take a team approach to it. My mom was there to help anytime I needed it though.
Which part of the process gave you the most stress? Again, the guest list! I was so disappointed in how some of our friends and family approached the RSVP process. It was supposed to be about Ben and I and I felt we spent a lot of time trying to please everyone else.
What did you do that you found helped out with stress the best? My fiancé- he was so supportive and never hesitated to take my side.
Is there anything that didn’t go as planned? It ended up raining right after the ceremony so we didn’t get some of the campus photos we wanted.
What was your favorite part of the experience/ event? The Dancing! Most couples say they don’t get a chance to dance and we wanted to make sure that didn’t happen. We danced all night with all of our family and friends.
If you could go back in time, what would you have changed? NOTHING- it was absolutely beautiful and a blast. I wish I could go back and have the same exact night again.
What did you do to save money? We tried to do as many things as possible by ourselves and tried to hired family and friends for the other important things.
What was your biggest splurge? The reception. We really wanted the convenience of Kellogg even though it was a bit pricey.
