Last night’s TONY awards red carpet provided plenty of dressporn to look at, along with some questionable style choices. Although the red carpet was windy, and the mood was somber – given the tragedy in Orlando early that morning, the stars came to spread messages of encouragement. Most displayed a silver ribbon pin in honor of those victims.
In case you were ever wondering why a wedding blog covers fashion events- or even if you were not wondering this, here are my thoughts: Fashion influences weddings, and weddings can even influence fashion. Wedding dresses are getting more and more diverse, and unconventional. Any of these red carpet gowns could be a wedding dress. And its just nice to look at for some dress inspiration.
Check out the fashion, and let’s discuss….
Actress Sohpie Okonedo sports a Zac Posen gown. It’s a shame that the backdrop is taking away from the pattern on her dress, but what can you do?
It’s nice when someone takes a bit of a risk on the red carpet – Renee Elise Goldsberry (from Hamilton) wore this Marc Jacobs dress that is completely different from the typical red carpet looks.
Daveed Diggs is in Hamilton, and he’s pretty awesome. Rapping in a French accent can’t be easy! His girlfriend Jalene Goodwin is so gorgeous. Both are wearing Maticevski.
Claire Danes kept things real simple (borderline: boring) in this navy Narciso Rodriquez dress.
Saoirse Ronan looks almost nude in this Stella McCartney dress that is the same color as her Irish skin.
Here’s some actual couture! Lupita Nyong’o wore a handmade Hugo Boss gown and killed it!
I really liked Oprah’s tea-length dress, but I cannot find info on who designed it. If you know, holler at me in the comments.
Meh, this is not good. Michelle Williams in a
white bed sheet Louis Vuitton creation. It is very ’90’s though, which I saw a few times on this red carpet.
I’m a sucker for copper, so I love this Delpozo dress on Pascale Armand.
Jane Krakowski wore a very cute Michael Kors gown, but I wish she would have done something with her hair!
Cynthia Erivo had a spectacular performance of a song from The Color Purple during the show that earned her a standing ovation. I love her bold choice of a dress for the red carpet – if it looks familiar, think of Beyonce smashing windows, because this is the same Roberto Cavalli dress in a different color.
Jessie Mueller wore a yellow tulle Christian Siriano dress.
Danielle Brooks from The Color Purple chose a deep blue Derek Lam gown.
Hamilton‘s Phillipa Soo wore this bridal-esque Prabal Gurung dress. It’s very pretty!
Cate Blanchett went for ‘edgy’ apparently, and I have mixed feelings. The Louis Vuitton dress is very heavy, and then her makeup takes the look to an even darker place. I just don’t know… I mean, it’s summer.
And here, Allison Williams went for a totally different kind of ‘edgy’ and pulled it off spectacularly! She is wearing custom DKNY. That’s how to you do a white suit!
One of my absolute favorites of the night was Keri Russell in this red Monique Lhuillier dress. I liked it so much that you have to look at two photos…
There’s a lot going on with this dress, and I don’t know exactly how to describe it… A little bit ’90’s, with modern cut-outs? Other publications are labeling her as worst dressed, but she’s my best dressed.
And this I do not understand at all. Is the jacket attached to the dress? Again, it is summer in New York so WTF? This is Karolina Kurkova (which, why is she there anyway??) wearing Coach 1941.
Joan Smalls wore a handkerchief-inspired Altuzarra dress. It’s actually kind of interesting, if you try not to think of handkerchiefs.
I guess Jourdan Dunn is Zac Posen’s date. A perk of wearing his design?
I love a Zuhair Murad dress, but I don’t love Lucy Liu in this one on the red carpet.
Queen Jessica Lange was a winner for best performance in a play, and chose to wear a beautiful shade of blue.
I wonder if Anna Wintour took off her sunglasses inside the event?
Also is brilliant blue was Uzo Aduba
Slay queen!!!! Another of my favorites of the night – Judith Light. Killed it.
I loved that Diane Lane chose to wear this bold wide-leg jumpsuit, but the fit seemed off. When she was presenting I took solace in the fact that palazzo pants give Diane the same square-hipped look that they give me. This is why I don’t wear them.
Host James Corden with wife Julia Carey. I was really entertained by him, and thought he did a great job.
Actress Laura Benanti rocked this bright Oscar de la Renta dress.
How did I not know that Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne were a couple? Rose is wearing Thakoon.
The man of the night, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Vanessa Nadal in Cenia.
I love this look! Nicolette Robinson in Christian Siriano.
Broadway actress Zainab Jah wore a very bridal-esque blush tulle gown.
Actress Heather Headley is wearing a beautiful Badgley Mischka gown.
Beth Behrs wore an interesting textured Marchesa Notte tea-length dress. It looks nice for Marchesa, who’s work is often way overdone.
Now this is a true Zuhair Murad couture gown! Mary- Elizabeth Winstead got to wear this work of art.
I’m just not keen on this red Zac Posen dress worn by Laura Michelle Kelly.
Actress Danai Gurira was popping colors in emerging designer Rosie Assoulin.
The frumpiness, the color, the hair, the fit – which is most offensive here? Not sure. This is singer Sara Bareilles’ red carpet fail in Gomez-Garcia.
Looking fabulous is Marlee Matlin wearing Jovani.
Meagan Hilty decided to go big or go home I guess. Other than the fit up top, it is a pretty dress.
This is definitely a wedding dress! Broadway star Laura Osnes rocks a beautiful (wedding?) gown.
So my best-dressed were Keri Russel and Slay Queen Judith Light – who were yours? Let me know in the comments.
