Detroit Wedding Venues: Sindbad’s Restaurant and Marina

Located right on the Detroit River, looking out to Belle Isle, is Sindbad’s.  The restaurant has been a Detroit landmark for 67 years, and was the location of my wedding reception.

The family-owned establishment has a large main dining area on the ground floor, and a 3rd floor room with a balcony that is available for rent.  The 3rd floor, named the Sohar Room, is a large, open room with a horsehoe-shaped bar in the center, a dance floor area, restrooms, and a wall of windows looking out onto a balcony and the marina.

I had first visited Sindbad’s with my then-fiancee a year before we got engaged.  We stopped into the bar one night for an appetizer and a beer. At that time, we agreed that someday we would come back for dinner.

After the engagement, when the hunt for a reception venue was in full swing, I had settled on having the wedding in Detroit, likely the east-side.  I remembered visiting Sindbad’s previously, and checked their website to see if they had a banquet room. I found the Sohar Room, and the rest is our wedding reception story….

The Sohar Room worked for us because it was in the location we wanted, it was the right size for our 100 guests, and the price for the value was great.

I added a few touches to make the space my own:

  • Chair covers
  • Uplighting
  • Centerpieces and tablecloths (Sindbad’s Provided linens and napkins!)
  • White Christmas lights strung on the balcony

There was one element of the space that I wasn’t too fond of… a pair of Elk heads on the back wall behind the bar.  During one pre-wedding visit, I stopped at the downstairs bar for a drink, and talked to the bartender about my upcoming reservation for the reception.  I mentioned the elk heads, and he gave me a great tip… dress the elks up as a bride and groom, and make it a joke!  That is just what we did.

Sindbad’s was great to work with.  Every item we requested from them, they accommodated us. We were even able to book their bus driver (Sindbad’s provides rides from the restaurant to downtown events) to shuttle guests to the Greektown hotel. And the food… it was phenomenal!  I was so pleased with the food, that I demanded that my husband take me back for dinner a few weeks after the honeymoon.

Overall, our experience was excellent.  I hope that in the future, we can celebrate many anniversaries there.
